Will overwinter in most areas.   <h2>PARSLEY PLANTING, GROWING, AND HARVESTING PARSLEY</h2> Parsley is a biennial plant with bright green, featherlike leaves and is in the same family as dill. This herb is used in soups, sauces, and salads, and it lessens the need for salt in soups. Not only is it the perfect garnish, but also it is healthy; it’s rich in iron and vitamins A and C.   PLANTING For a head start, plant seeds in individual pots indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last spring frost. For better germination, you can soak the seeds overnight. Plant the seeds 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost because parsley is a slow starter. (The plants can handle the cold weather.) It can take up to 3 weeks for the plants to sprout. Plant the seeds in moist, rich soil about 6 to 8 inches apart. For thinner plants, plant about 6 to 10 inches apart. This parsley is best for cooking since it can withstand heat and retains its flavour better than curly parsley. Italian Giant is a selective plant with deeply cut, bright green leaves. Known to have better flavor than other varieties, it is increasingly popular in the kitchen and is indispensable for a huge range of cooked and salad dishes. It is the choice parsley for drying. Parsley can also be grown a pot to keep indoors year-round or over the winter for a supply of fresh leaves. Though technically a biennial, it is often grown as an annual herb where it cannot winter over. Don’t grow in those “Parsley Pots” – the one with six holes around the side…parsley likes moisture and these containers dry out too fast, the holes in the side are small and make it difficult to water and the parsley has too big a tap root to be happy! Soil Preparation: Parsley is a hungry plant it likes good deep soil, not too light and not acidic. Feed the chosen site well in the autumn with well-rotted manure. If you wish to harvest parsley all year round, prepare two different sites. For summer supplies, a western or eastern border is ideal because the plant needs moisture and prefers a little shade. Jednoletá bylina s vřetenovitým oddenkem a s jemně rýhovanou, přímou, nahoře větvenou, až 50 cm vysokou lodyhou a listy trojího druhu. Spodní jsou jednoduché, srdčitě okrouhlé a zastřihované zubaté, prostřední jsou jednoduše zpeřené a horní trojčetně přenosečné. Všechny listy mají velké pochvy. Bílé květy jsou uspořádané v okolíky se 7–15 paprsky. Plod je štětinatě brvitý. Všechny části rostliny aromaticky voní. Kvete od června do května. <h2>Rozšíření</h2> Dnes se pěstuje na Balkáně, Španělsku, Indii, Turecku, Mexiku, ve středomořských státech. Je koření i lék používaný už ve starověku. Pěstuje se i v Česku, v teplejších oblastech. <h2>Využití</h2> Pro léčebné využití i jako koření se používá plod – dvounažka zelenošedé, šedožluté či šedohnědé barvy. Sbírá se v srpnu až září, plody se nechají dozrát, suší se v tenkých vrstvách. Vůni dodává silice, ve které je hlavní složkou anetol. V léčebném využití se využívá hlavně nálev, méně již čistá silice, v případech předávkování silicí může dojít k otoku mozku a plic. Anýz je výborným prostředkem podporujícím vykašlávání. Žvýkání semen anýzu zabraňuje páchnutí z úst. V trávicím traktu působí spasmolyticky. Jeho použití je vhodné i v pediatrii. Podporuje tvorbu mateřského mléka, do nějž se jeho účinky také přenáší. Zvyšuje tvorbu žluče, urychluje trávení, omezuje plynatost. Působí proti střevním katarům, křečím trávicího traktu. Jeho použití je mnohostranné. Dává se do pečiva (např. do perníku), do chleba, při nakládání červené řepy, červeného zelí). Hodí se i do jablečného a hruškového kompotu. Špetka anýzu je vhodná k žampionům, k rybám. Je součástí mnoha kořenitých směsí. V indické a čínské kuchyni je častý v masitých pokrmech. Lovage is an erect, herbaceous, perennial plant growing to 1.8–2.5 m (5.9–8.2 ft) tall, with a basal rosette of leaves and stems with further leaves, the flowers being produced in umbels at the top of the stems. The stems and leaves are shiny glabrous green to yellow-green and smell of lime when crushed. The larger basal leaves are up to 70 cm (28 in) long, tripinnate, with broad triangular to rhomboidal, acutely pointed leaflets with a few marginal teeth; the stem leaves are smaller, and less divided with few leaflets. The flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow, 2–3 mm (0.079–0.118 in) diameter, produced in globose umbels up to 10–15 cm (3.9–5.9 in) diameter; flowering is in late spring.
