🌿 Gossypium herbaceum, auch als Levant Cotton bekannt, ist eine kurzlebige, schnell wachsende, mehrjährige Strauchpflanze, die bis zu 1,5 m hoch werden kann. Sie trägt trilobierte oder handförmige Blätter und kleine, gelbe hibiskusähnliche Blüten mit lila Zentrum. Die Pflanze bildet Kapselfrüchte, die bei Reife aufplatzen und weiße Baumwollfasern freilegen – die Grundlage für Textilien.

Diese Art stammt aus den halbtrockenen Regionen Subsahara-Afrikas und Arabiens und wächst dort wild. Sie ist eng verwandt mit Gossypium arboreum.
🌿 Wachstum und Pflege:
Klima: Liebt lange, heiße Vegetationsperioden; sehr frostempfindlich, daher frostfreie Standorte empfohlen.
Wuchs: 0,6–1,8 m hoch, schnellwachsend, ideale Pflanze für Garten oder Anbau als einjährige Pflanze in kühleren Regionen.
Aussaat: Samen in gut durchlässige Erde setzen, sonnigen Standort wählen, gleichmäßig feucht halten.
Keimung: 7–14 Tage bei warmen Temperaturen.
🧵 Verwendung:
Textilien: Die aus den Samen entstehenden Baumwollfasern (Lint) bestehen fast vollständig aus Cellulose und werden zu Garnen gesponnen und in Stoffe gewebt. Baumwolle ist atmungsaktiv, widerstandsfähig und angenehm im Tragen.
Medizinisch: Traditionell zur Unterstützung des Menstruationszyklus, nach der Geburt, bei Verdauungsbeschwerden und Fieber genutzt.
Nahrungsmittel/Öl: Baumwollsamen enthalten bis zu 20% Öl und 20% Proteine, müssen jedoch vor Verzehr behandelt werden, um das giftige Gossypol zu entfernen.
