Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa), also known as Chinese Dogwood, Korean Dogwood, or Japanese Dogwood, is a small deciduous ornamental tree native to East Asia. It typically grows 8–12 meters (26–39 ft) tall and produces spectacular white bracts that look like four-petaled flowers in late spring, a few weeks after the leaves emerge. The true flowers are tiny yellow-green clusters, surrounded by these elegant, showy bracts that make the tree an eye-catching centerpiece in any garden.
This variety can be easily distinguished from the North American Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) by its upright growth habit, later flowering period, and pointed bracts instead of rounded ones. In autumn, its foliage turns a brilliant red, adding an extra season of beauty to the landscape.
The Kousa Dogwood produces edible, pink to red fruits that resemble small berries or balls, about 2–3 cm in diameter, occasionally reaching up to 4 cm later in the season. These fruits have a sweet, tropical flavor, making them not only decorative but also a tasty treat. They can be eaten fresh or used for making wine, jellies, and preserves.
Unlike many related species, Cornus kousa is highly resistant to dogwood anthracnose disease (caused by Discula destructiva), which often affects Cornus florida. Because of its strong resistance and ornamental appeal, it is a preferred landscape tree in regions where other dogwoods struggle. Several hybrids between C. kousa and C. florida have been bred for even greater disease resistance and striking flower forms.
Propagation: Seeds
Pretreatment: Soak in water for 24 hours before sowing
