π° Price: Package of 5 seeds
π Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as maypop, purple passionflower, true passionflower, wild apricot, or wild passion vine, is a fast-growing perennial vine with climbing or trailing stems. Native to the southern United States, it is one of the hardiest species of Passiflora, able to survive winters with roots enduring temperatures down to β20β―Β°C. The above-ground vine may die back in winter, but returns from its roots in spring.
The vine produces large, intricate flowers with prominent styles and stamens. The five bluish-white petals are surrounded by a striking white-and-purple corona. Maypop flowers bloom in July and are self-sterile, relying on insects like bumblebees and carpenter bees for pollination. The stems are long and trailing, often with tendrils for support, and leaves are alternate, palmately 3-lobed (occasionally 5-lobed), 6β15β―cm long, with two distinctive glands at the base.
The fleshy fruitβalso called a maypopβis an oval yellowish berry, initially green and turning orange at maturity. It is about the size of a hen egg and βpopsβ when stepped on, giving the vine its common name. The fruit is edible and used for jams, jellies, and beverages, and is a favorite food for wildlife. Maypop is also the exclusive larval host for Gulf fritillary butterflies and supports other pollinators.
πΏ Medicinal and Culinary Uses:
Historically, P. incarnata has been used as a mild sedative and anxiolytic. Herbal preparations from leaves and roots have addressed anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, and mild pain. Flavonoids, including chrysin, apigenin, and luteolin, are thought to contribute to its sedative effects. The fruit can be eaten raw or used to make juice, jams, or jellies, similar to Passiflora edulis.
