TheĀ leavesĀ and the bark were traditionally used inĀ leather tanningĀ and containĀ tannic acid.
Dyes of various colours,Ā red,Ā yellow,Ā black, andĀ brown, can be made from different parts of the plant.
OilĀ extracted from theĀ seedsĀ can be used to makeĀ candles.
Scientific studies indicateĀ Rhus coriariaĀ isĀ hepatoprotectiveĀ (protects the liver),Ā antimicrobialĀ and exhibits a strongĀ antioxidantĀ activityĀ which is rich inĀ anthocyaninsĀ and hydrolysableĀ tannins. Unlike the similiarly named poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix), there are no reactions fromĀ Rhus coriariaĀ documented in medical literature.
