Very large flat-leaf variety from Naples with incredible flavor. Plants are large with strong, long stalks and large leaves.</p> <p>Start from seed or transplants. Leaves grow back stronger after cutting. 75-80 days. Very cold hardy. Will overwinter in most areas.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h2><strong>PARSLEY PLANTING, GROWING, AND HARVESTING PARSLEY</strong></h2> <p>Parsley is a biennial plant with bright green, featherlike leaves and is in the same family as dill. This herb is used in soups, sauces, and salads, and it lessens the need for salt in soups. Not only is it the perfect garnish, but also it is healthy; it’s rich in iron and vitamins A and C.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>PLANTING</strong></p> <p>For a head start, plant seeds in individual pots indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last spring frost. For better germination, you can soak the seeds overnight.</p> <p>Plant the seeds 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost because parsley is a slow starter. (The plants can handle the cold weather.) It can take up to 3 weeks for the plants to sprout.</p> <p>Plant the seeds in moist, rich soil about 6 to 8 inches apart. For thinner plants, plant about 6 to 10 inches apart. Try to pick an area that is weed-free; that way, you’ll be able to see the parsley sprouting after about 3 weeks.</p> <p>You can use a fluorescent light to help the seedlings grow. Parsley is a favorite for making lots of herbal blends. The versatile herb can be used in many ways and has lots of natural vitamins and minerals.</p> <p>Parsley, especially amongst herbs, can be appreciated at it's most flavorsome when picked fresh from your garden.</p> <p>The seed needs 20-30 days to germinate. <br />In autumn it can be transplanted into pots to be kept in the kitchen for winter use. This parsley is best for cooking since it can withstand heat and retains its flavour better than curly parsley.</p> <p class="description">Italian Giant is a selective plant with deeply cut, bright green leaves. Known to have better flavor than other varieties, it is increasingly popular in the kitchen and is indispensable for a huge range of cooked and salad dishes. It is the choice parsley for drying.</p> <p class="description">Parsley can also be grown a pot to keep indoors year-round or over the winter for a supply of fresh leaves. Though technically a biennial, it is often grown as an annual herb where it cannot winter over.<br>Don’t grow in those “Parsley Pots” – the one with six holes around the side…parsley likes moisture and these containers dry out too fast, the holes in the side are small and make it difficult to water and the parsley has too big a tap root to be happy!</p> <p><strong><span class="headings">Soil Preparation:</span> </strong></p> <p>Parsley is a hungry plant it likes good deep soil, not too light and not acidic. The stems and leaves are shiny glabrous green to yellow-green and smell of lime when crushed. The larger basal leaves are up to 70 cm (28 in) long, tripinnate, with broad triangular to rhomboidal, acutely pointed leaflets with a few marginal teeth; the stem leaves are smaller, and less divided with few leaflets. The flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow, 2–3 mm (0.079–0.118 in) diameter, produced in globose umbels up to 10–15 cm (3.9–5.9 in) diameter; flowering is in late spring. The fruit is a dry two-parted schizocarp 4–7 mm (0.16–0.28 in) long, mature in autumn.</p> <p><strong>Distribution</strong></p> <p>The exact native range is disputed; some sources cite it as native to much of Europe and southwestern Asia, others from only the eastern Mediterranean region in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, and yet others only to southwestern Asia in Iran and Afghanistan, citing European populations as naturalized. It has been long cultivated in Europe, the leaves being used as an herb, the roots as a vegetable, and the seeds as a spice, especially in southern European cuisine.</p> <p><strong>Properties and uses</strong></p> <p>The leaves can be used in salads, or to make soup or season broths, and the roots can be eaten as a vegetable or grated for use in salads. Its flavor and smell is somewhat similar to celery. The seeds can be used as a spice, similar to fennel seeds. In the UK, an alcoholic lovage cordial is traditionally mixed with brandy in the ratio of 2:1 as a winter drink. In Romania, the leaves are the preferred seasoning for the various local broths, much more so than parsley or dill.</p> <p>The roots, which contain heavy, volatile oil, are used as a mild aquaretic.
