Tamarind Seeds (Tamarindus indica)

Price for Package of 5 seeds.

The tamarind is a long-lived, medium-growth, bushy tree which attains a maximum crown height of 12.1 to 18.3 metres (40 to 60 feet). The crown has an irregular, vase-shaped outline of dense foliage. The tree grows well in full sun in clay, loam, sandy, and acidic soil types, with high drought and aerosol salt (wind-borne salt as found in the coastal area) resistance.

Leaves are evergreen, bright green in colour, an elliptical ovular, arrangement is alternate, of the pinnately compound type, with pinnate venation and less than 5 cm (2 inches) in length. The branches droop from a single, central trunk as the tree matures and is often pruned in human agriculture to optimize tree density and ease of fruit harvest. At night, the leaflets close up.

The tamarind does flower, though inconspicuously, with red and yellow elongated flowers. Flowers are 2.5 cm wide (one inch), five-petalled, borne in small racemes, and yellow with orange or red streaks. Buds are pink as the four sepals are pink and are lost when the flower blooms.

The fruit is an indehiscent legume, sometimes called a pod, 12 to 15 cm (3 to 6 inches) in length, with a hard, brown shell. The fruit has a fleshy, juicy, acidulous pulp. It is mature when the flesh is coloured brown or reddish-brown. The tamarinds of Asia have longer pods containing six to 12 seeds, whereas African and West Indian varieties have short pods containing one to six seeds. The seeds are somewhat flattened, and glossy brown.

The tamarind is best described as sweet and sour in taste, and is high in acid, sugar, B vitamins and, interestingly for a fruit, calcium.

As a tropical species, it is frost sensitive. The pinnate leaves with opposite leaflets give a billowing effect in the wind. Tamarind timber consists of hard, dark red heartwood and softer, yellowish sapwood.

Tamarind is harvested by pulling the pod from its stalk. A mature tree may be capable of producing up to 175 kg (350 lb) of fruit per year

Care:

Soil:

The tree tolerates clay, silt, sand, and acid soils with high drought and salt air.

Exposure:

Full sun.

Water:

Water regularly. Although the tree is drought resistant, it will drop its leaves after a prolonged drought.

Fertilizer:

Young trees: every 2-3 months with 6-6-3 NPK.

Older, fruit-bearing trees: 3-4 times per year with 8-3-9 NPK

Propagation:

From seed. Only the large brown seeds from fresh, ripe pods are viable. The seeds maintain their viability 3-4 years on condition that they kept are in a dry box.

Sowing instructions:

scarify the seeds or boil them for 30 minutes in water at 100 °C and plunge them in a cold bath to stop the heating. Both procedures provide better water absorption by the seed and increase the germination rate to about 95% by breaking down the hard shell.

plant the seeds in a light mix, in high containers (a deep taproot develops early on)

mist the substrate so that it is damp, not wet

cover the pots to prevent evaporation

20-25 °C (68-77 °F)

germination time: 7-10 days

protect the seedlings from direct sunlight until they are at least 30 cm (1′) high

be careful when transplanting, the roots do not tolerate damage

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

pour hot water + soak about 24-48 hrs

Stratification:

0

Sowing Time:

all year round

Sowing Depth:

1 cm

Sowing Mix:

Coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite

Germination temperature:

25-28 ° C

Location:

bright + keep constantly moist not wet

Germination Time:

2-4 Weeks

Watering:

Water regularly during the growing season

Copyright © 2012 Seeds Gallery - Saatgut Galerie - Galerija semena. All Rights Reserved.

Winter: Older specimens light at about 5-10 ° C, and only so much water that the root ball does not dry out completely.
Russet Buffaloberry Seeds (Shepherdia canadensis)

Price for Package of 5 seeds.

Hardy, Adaptable, Easy to Grow, Fast Growth, Edible Fruits, Attracts Birds, Wildlife Food/Shelter, Cold, Heat, Drought, Salt and Wind Tolerant, Nitrogen Fixing.

Shepherdia canadensis, also known as Russet Buffaloberry, Soopolallie, Soapberry, or Foamberry, is one of a small number of shrubs of the genus Shepherdia bearing edible red berries. The berries have an extremely bitter taste. The plant is a deciduous shrub found in open forests and thickets all over North America. Its northern limit is around the Arctic Circle. The shrub reaches a height of 3 to 13 feet. Fruits are extensively collected by some Canadian First Nations peoples such as Nlaka'pamux (Thompson), St̓átimc and Secwepemc (Shuswap) in the province of British Columbia. The bitter berries are not eaten directly but rather processed as sxusem ("sxushem") or "Indian ice-cream". Branches bearing fruit are hit with a stick and only the very ripe fruits that fall off are collected. A clean mat or tarpaulin is placed below the bush for collection. The berries are later placed into a great bowl that is absolutely free of oil or fat and are mixed with some sweet fruit such as raspberries. The mixture of berries is crushed and vigorously beaten in the manner of whipping cream in order to raise the typical foam of the sxusem confection. Sxusem has an agreeable blend of sweet and somewhat bitter tastes, possibly comparable to that encountered in sweetened coffee. The substance is believed by the First Nations peoples who prepare it to have many healthful properties, but the saponin chemicals making up the foam may also cause gastrointestinal irritation if consumed greatly. Native theme restaurants in British Columbia have occasionally had sxusem on the menu in recent years.

Leaf: Alternate, simple, elliptical to ovate, entire margins, 1 to 2 inches long, somewhat thickened dark green above with numerous silvery white scales, silvery white below with red-brown scales.

Flower: Dioecious; male and female flowers both light yellow-green, small (1/6 inch) and inconspicuous, appearing in early spring.

Fruit: A bright red drupe-like achene, 1/3 inch long and somewhat elongated, generally with a few silvery scales, ripen in mid to late summer and often occur in great abundance.

Twig: Slender, light brown and covered in numerous reddish brown, scruffy scales; buds stalked with valvate scales, flower buds more round.

Bark: Shiny reddish gray with numerous lenticels that develop into larger cracks and splits.

Form: A small shrub reaching up to 6 feet in height (occasionally much larger) with a dense rounded crown.

Other Names: Russet Buffaloberry, Russet Buffalo berry, Hippophae canadensis, Rabbitberry, Foamberry Soapberry, Soopalollie, Canadian Buffaloberry

Zone: 2 to 6

Growth Rate: Fast

Plant Type: Deciduous Shrub

Family: Elaeagnaceae

Height: 6 to 8 feet

Spread: 6 to 8 feet

Shape: Upright, rounded

Bloom Time: April-May

Bloom Color: Yellow

Flower/Fruit: Small, inconspicuous, yellow flowers are followed by yellowish-red, oval-shaped fruits.

Sun: Sun-Part Shade

Drought Tolerance: High

Water: Medium

Maintenance: Medium

Site Requirements/ Soil Tolerances: Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerates wide range of soils. Very hardy and adaptable. Give it plenty of room to spread.

Culture: Can be pruned to a small tree. Remove root suckers and runners to control any unwanted spread of the plant. To keep it at a low height, cut it back to knee high every 5 to 10 years. If it gets too leggy, it can be cut back to the ground and it will come back bushier and with more berries the next year.

Uses: Wildlife shelter, screens, windbreaks. Naturalize in open woodland areas where it can be allowed to spread. Erosion control on slopes. Native plant gardens. Informal hedge. Good for dry, salty, high-pH soils, such as along highways.

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

Pour Hot water over seed. Pink buds open to a profuse, spring bloom of fragrant, 1 inch sparkling white flowers. Profuse bloom often occurs only in alternate years. Flowers are followed by small, 1/4 inch, shiny red crabapples, which mature in the fall. The pea-sized fruits are sweet flavored like rose hips, but are not usually used in cooking. Fruits are long-lasting providing winter interest and are attractive to birds and other wildlife. The ovate, lobed, dark green leaves turn yellow in autumn. The yellow fall color contrasts well with the red fruit. The smallest of the flowering crabapple species, this unique very small tree exhibits a very dense, wide-spreading,rounded habit. It can also be grown as a dense multi-stemmed shrub for use in borders or as a screen or hedge.

Apple trees begin to fruit in the 3rd year and come into full production from the 11th to 20th year. They may continue to fruit for about 100 years although the fruits may become commercially unprofitable. They require a period of winter dormancy, in general 900-1000 hours of more at less than 45°F. They performs best in areas with medium to low humidity, with long daylight hours, high light intensity and relatively warm days and cool nights.

Other Names: Sargent's Crab apple, Sargent Crab apple, Sargent's Crabapple, Sargent Crabapple

Zone: 4 to 7

Growth Rate: Fast

Plant Type: Small deciduous fruiting tree

Family: Rosaceae

Native Range: Japan

Height: 6 to 8 feet

Spread: 8 to 10 feet

Shape: Rounded small tree with a dense crown.

Bloom Time: April-May

Bloom Color: Pink buds opening toWhite

Flower/Fruit: White fragrant flowers followed by shiny red 1/4 inch fruit

Sun: Full Sun

Fall Color: Yellow

Drought Tolerance: Moderate

Water: Medium

Maintenance: Low

Site Requirements/ Soil Tolerances: Best grown in loamy, medium moisture, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun. Wintergreen is a member of the Heath family that forms large mats of glossy green groundcover in the woods. This creeping, rhizomatous shrublet grows to 6 inches tall with scalloped or bristly toothed, glossy, dark green leaves which turn reddish with the advent of cold weather. Foliage has a strong wintergreen scent when crushed. Bell-shaped, nodding, white or pale pink flowers appear in May thru summer and mature to aromatic scarlet fruit that often persists through the winter. This semi-woody, aromatic perennial has creeping underground stems, thus forming small colonies of plants.

Wintergreen is the source of wintergreen oil, which is used as a flavoring in candies, chewing gum and some medicine. The leaves are used as a tea.
Wintergreen was used by Native Americans to brew a tea. Mohawks, as well as Ojibwes and others, knew the tea as medicinal as well as a healthful beverage. It contains methyl salycliates, the active pain killlers of aspirin, useful for colds, headaches and to bring down fevers. Such names as "teaberry" emphasize importance as a year-round beverage and as a food flavoring for meat and fish cooked with fermented leaves. The berries are cooked into pies and eaten raw during the winter by some tribes. The genus was named for Dr. Gaultier, a Canadian physician of the mid-18th century.

Leaf: Alternate, simple, evergreen, oval to elliptical, 1 to 2 inches long, minutely serrated, thickened with a wintergreen odor when crushed, leaves appear whorled since they cluster at tips of plant; dark shiny green above, much paler below often with black dots.

Flower: Monoecious; small, 1/4 inch, white, urn-shaped, hanging from short stems from leaf axils, appearing in mid to late summer.

Fruit: Red, round, 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter, hanging beneath the leaves, mild wintergreen taste, ripen in late summer and persist into winter.

Twig: Slender, green turning brown with age.

Bark: Light brown.

Form: Low plant with a height of only 3 to 5 inches; stems shoot out of the ground and end in a tight cluster of leaves.

Wildlife: Fruit is eaten by a variety of mammals and birds including: chipmunks, deer, grouse and partridge. Leaves are browsed by deer and moose.

Other Names: Box Berry, Checkerberry, Deerberry, Eastern Teaberry, Ground Holly, Mountain Tea, Creeping Wintergreen, Ground Tea, Partridge-Berry, Petit the du bois (Quebec, "little tea of the woods"), Redberry Wintergreen, Spice Berry, Teaberry, Winisibugons (Ojibwe, "dirty leaf").

Zone: 3 to 8
Growth Rate: Slow
Plant Type: Perennial Ground Cover
Family: Ericaceae
Native Range: Eastern North America
Height: 2 to 6 inches
Spread: 12 to 16 inches.
Shape: Ground Cover.
Manilkara zapota Seeds (Chico Sapote) Zapote, Chicle sapodilla

Price for Package of 1 seeds.

Manilkara zapota, commonly known as the sapodilla, is a long-lived, evergreen tree native to southern Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. An example natural occurrence is in coastal Yucatan in the Petenes mangroves ecoregion, where it is a subdominant plant species. It was introduced to the Philippines during Spanish colonization. It is grown in huge quantities in India, Pakistan and Mexico.

Description

Sapodilla fruits being sold on a street at Guntur, India.

Sapodilla can grow to more than 30 m (98 ft) tall with an average trunk diameter of 1.5 m (4.9 ft). The average height of cultivated specimens, however, is usually between 9 and 15 m (30 and 49 ft) with a trunk diameter not exceeding 50 cm (20 in). It is wind-resistant and the bark is rich in a white, gummy latex called chicle. The ornamental leaves are medium green and glossy. They are alternate, elliptic to ovate, 7–15 cm long, with an entire margin. The white flowers are inconspicuous and bell-like, with a six-lobed corolla.

The fruit is a large ellipsoid berry, 4–8 cm in diameter, very much resembling a smooth-skinned potato and containing two to five seeds. Inside, its flesh ranges from a pale yellow to an earthy brown color with a grainy texture akin to that of a well-ripened pear. The seeds are black and resemble beans, with a hook at one end that can catch in the throat if swallowed. The fruit has a high latex content and does not ripen until picked, whereupon the fruit softens to a firmness and appearance very similar to that of a fuzzy, brown-skinned kiwifruit.

Fruit, cross-section

The fruit has an exceptionally sweet, malty flavor. Many believe the flavor bears a striking resemblance to caramel or a pear candied with brown sugar. The unripe fruit is hard to the touch and contains high amounts of saponin, which has astringent properties similar to tannin, drying out the mouth.

The trees can only survive in warm, typically tropical environments, dying easily if the temperature drops below freezing. From germination, the sapodilla tree will usually take anywhere from five to eight years to bear fruit. The sapodilla trees yield fruit twice a year, though flowering may continue year round.

Other names

Sapodilla is known as sapodilla in Guyana, Grenada, and Trinidad & Tobago, zapote in Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, níspero in Costa Rica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, dilly in the Bahamas, naseberry in Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, sapoti in Brazil and Haiti, chico or tsiko in the Philippines and chicosapote or chicozapote in Mexico, Hawaii, southern California and southern Florida.

It is known as chikoo ("चिक्कू" or chiku, "चीकू,") in India and Pakistan ("چیکو" chiku or "آلوچَہ" âlucha) and sapota in some parts of India (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh), sapathilla or rata-mi in Sri Lanka, sobeda/sofeda (সবেদা or সফেদা) in eastern India and Bangladesh, sabudheli ("ސަބުދެލި") in Maldives, sawo in Indonesia and saos in West Sumatra, hồng xiêm (lit. Siamese persimmon), lồng mứt or xa pô chê in Vietnam, lamoot (ละมุด) in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

It is called ciku in standard Malay and sawo nilo in Kelantanese Malay. In Chinese, the name is mistakenly translated by many people roughly as "ginseng fruit" (人參果), though this is also the name used for the pepino, an unrelated fruit; it should instead be "heart fruit" (人心果) because it is shaped like the heart.

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

0

Stratification:

0

Sowing Time:

all year round

Sowing Depth:

1 cm

Sowing Mix:

Coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite

Germination temperature:

about 25-28 ° C

Location:

bright + keep constantly moist not wet

Germination Time:

about 2-8 weeks

Watering:

Water regularly during the growing season

Copyright © 2012 Seeds Gallery - Saatgut Galerie - Galerija semena. All Rights Reserved.

Note: wind, salt and dry tolerant!

It is one of the group of strangler figs, where it starts its life deposited on a branch or trunk of a tree by a fig eating bird. The seed rapidly germinates and it starts its life as an epiphyte. It sends out roots that, when they reach the soil below, completely change the nature of the small plant. Boosted by the extra nourishment, it rapidly grows and entwines its host, effectively strangling the very life from it. Eventually the host tree dies and the Banyan is left in its place. By means of aerial roots it forms huge buttressed trunks and can cover an area of 100's of square metres.

Capable of growing to over 150 feet tall or more with a spread of 200 - 300 feet or so, this has the potential to become a truly monstrous tree. Pot culture and pruning will keep its size down to more manageable proportions and it does not resent such treatment and will thrive in all sorts of conditions. A tropical tree it is hardy to Zone 11 and is suitable for growing as pot plant or bonsai specimen. It makes an ideal indoor bonsai for those of you looking for a true permanent indoor specimen.

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

0

Stratification:

0

Sowing Time:

all year round

Sowing Depth:

Cover lightly with substrate

Sowing Mix:

Coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite

Germination temperature:

25 ° C +

Location:

bright + keep constantly moist not wet

Germination Time:

until it germinates

Watering:

Water regularly during the growing season

Copyright © 2012 Seeds Gallery - Saatgut Galerie - Galerija semena. All Rights Reserved.

Granny Smith Apple Seeds (Malus sylvestris)

Price for Package of 5 seeds.

One of the most commonly requested types of apple tree is the granny smith apple tree. The granny smith apple tree produces fruit that is tart and delicious. The apples from a granny smith apple tree are unique, in that they do not change in color from green. Most apples, once mature, will either turn red or yellow, and sometimes a combination of the two. It is harder to tell a mature granny smith apple from a younger one, in that they are both green.

The fruit produced by a granny smith apple tree is an all-purpose apple with green skin and firm crisp flesh. The fruit can be eaten straight off the tree, or cooked in a variety of fashions. The flesh of a granny smith apple will remain crisp for longer than many other breeds once the apple has been cut. The granny smith apple tree is believed to have originally come from the seed of a French crab apple.

Granny smith apple trees are not self-pollinating. This means that another type of apple tree is needed in order for the granny smith apple tree to produce fruit. Like most other apple trees, the pollinating tree used with a granny smith does not really matter that much. As long as the pollen is fertile, nearly any apple tree will be able to pollinate a granny smith apple tree and create delicious fruit.

Granny smith apple trees are hardy in zones six through eight, and require a good deal of sunlight. When pruned and cared for properly, a granny smith apple tree will grow for over fifty years. Granny smith apple trees do not require very much support, as they are typically able to support their own weight. In the semi-dwarf state, granny smith apple trees will grow to fourteen feet high.

How to Grow Apple Trees From Seed

Put the seeds in a container or zip lock bag. You can also add soil if you wish. Place the container or bag in your refrigerator for about 3 months.

If you chose to add soil you can moisten the soil after about 10 or 11 weeks. Keep a good watch on the bag and let fresh air in often. You should start to see leaves popping out of the soil in a few weeks if everything went right.

If you didn't choose to add soil you can try to plant the seeds directly into pots or in the ground. If you time it out you can let the seeds dry over the winter and put them into the refrigerator 3 months before the frost usually leaves. Cool weather seems to help apple seeds sprout as well.

How to grow an Apple Tree from seeds:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+grow+an+apple+tree+from+seed

A megfelelően tárolt gesztenye is kb. fél év alatt elveszti csírázóképességét, ezért csírázási százaléka alacsony. Magcsemetéje lassan fejlődik, szemzésre kétéves csemete felel meg. Nyugat-Európában a tintafoltbetegség pusztítása miatt, mely a gyökéren keresztül is fertőz, ellenálló gyökérzetű japán gesztenyére (Castanea crenata) szemzik a fajtákat. A gesztenye férgesedése ellen a megrágott gyümölcs gyakori összeszedésével védekeznek.

Felhasználása

Az Aureomarginata (sárgaszélű) levélváltozat

Virágai jó mézelők, a gesztenyeméz különlegességnek számít.

Termése, a gesztenye nagyon sokféleképpen használható:

a maghéját bevágva pirítják nyílt tűzön,

héjától megtisztítva kandírozzák,

főzés után meghámozva készítenek belőle pürét, amivel süteményeket, mártásokat ízesítenek vagy tejszínhabbal tálalják.

A szárított magokat porrá őrölve tárolják.

Sűrű, szabályos koronája miatt díszfának is ültetik.

Sokoldalúan felhasználható a faanyaga.
Feijoa, Pineapple Guava Seeds (Acca sellowiana)

Price for Package of 5 seeds.

Here's a shrub to show visitors to your garden - with grey-green leaves, white-felted beneath, and most attractive and rather unusual flowers with crimson and white petals and numerous prominent crimson stamens. In hot summer, these are followed by egg-sized and shaped berries that are edible, having a Guava-like flavor. However, not only are these fruits edible but the flower petals also, these having a rich, aromatic flavour. Almost hardy, but likes a warm, sunny position. Brazil.

Acca sellowiana, a species of flowering plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina, and Colombia.[1] It is widely cultivated as a garden plant and fruiting tree in New Zealand and can be found as a garden plant elsewhere such as in Australia, Azerbaijan, the West part of Georgia, South part of Russia and South Africa. [2] Common names include feijoa (pron.: /feɪˈʒoʊ.ə/, /feɪˈdʒoʊ.ə/,[3] or /feɪˈhoʊ.ə/)[4] pineapple guava and guavasteen. It is an evergreen, perennial shrub or small tree, 1–7 meters (3.3–23 ft) in height, widely cultivated as a garden plant and fruiting tree. The German botanist Otto Karl Berg named feijoa after João da Silva Feijó, a Portuguese botanist born in the colony of Brazil.

Fruit

The fruit, maturing in autumn, is green, ellipsoid, and about the size of a chicken egg. It has a sweet, aromatic flavor. The flesh is juicy and is divided into a clear gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, slightly granular, opaque flesh nearer the skin. The fruit falls to the ground when ripe and at its fullest flavor, but it may be picked from the tree prior to falling to prevent bruising.

The fruit pulp resembles the closely related guava, having a gritty texture. The feijoa pulp is used in some natural cosmetic products as an exfoliant. Feijoa fruit has a distinctive, potent smell that resembles that of a fine perfume. The aroma is due to the ester methyl benzoate and related compounds that exist in the fruit.

Growing conditions

It is a warm-temperate to subtropical plant that also will grow in the tropics, but requires at least 50 hours of winter chilling to fruit, and is frost-tolerant. When grown from seed, feijoas are noted for extremely slow growth during their first year or two, and young plants, though cold tolerant, can be very sensitive to high wind.

In the Northern Hemisphere, this species has been cultivated as far north as western Scotland, but under such conditions, it does not fruit every year, as winter temperatures below approximately −9 °C (16 °F) kill the flower buds. Summer temperatures above 90 °F (32 °C) may also have an adverse effect upon the fruit set. Feijoas are somewhat tolerant of drought and salt in soils, though fruit production can be adversely affected. Tolerant to partial shade, regular watering is essential while the fruit is maturing.

Seasonality

Large quantities of the fruit are grown in New Zealand, where it is a popular garden tree and the fruit commonly is available in season; the season runs from March to June. Feijoas are occasionally to be found as landscape plants in the far Southern United States, in regions from Texas to Florida, and southern California, though the fruit set can be unreliable in those locations. They are also grown in parts of northern California for their fruit. Fruits are an extremely rare sight away from cultivation areas, and when they can be found, they are often very, very expensive due to scarcity and demand even in places where the fruit isn't well-known.

Hardier varieties are grown in the Russian region of Buriatia (city Ulan-Ude).

Consumption and uses

The fruit usually is eaten by cutting it in half, then scooping out the pulp with a spoon.[5] The fruit has a juicy, sweet seed pulp and slightly gritty flesh nearer the skin. If the utensils needed to eat it this way are not available, the feijoa may be torn or bitten in half, and the contents squeezed out and consumed. An alternative method is to bite the end off and then tear the fruit in half lengthways, exposing a larger surface with less curvature and using one's teeth to scrape the pulp out closer to the skin. This method results in less waste of the fruit.

A feijoa may be used as an interesting addition to a fruit smoothie and may be used to make wine or cider and feijoa-infused vodka. The flavor is aromatic, very strong and complex, inviting comparison with guava, strawberry, pineapple, and often containing a faint wintergreen-like aftertaste. It also is possible to buy feijoa yogurt, fruit drinks, jam, ice cream, and such in New Zealand. It also may be cooked and used in dishes where one would use stewed fruit. It is a popular ingredient in chutney. The very strong, complex flavor can make using feijoas, in combination with other fruits or vegetables, a creative and complex undertaking.

Fruit maturity is not always apparent visually, as the fruits remain the same shade of green until they are overripe or rotting. One usually may sense ripeness, however, by giving the fruit a soft squeeze; a ripe feijoa will yield to pressure somewhat like a just-ripe banana. Generally, the fruit is at its optimum ripeness the day it drops from the tree. While still hanging, it may well prove bitter; once fallen, however, the fruit very quickly becomes overripe, so a daily collection of fallen fruit is advisable during the season.

When the fruit is immature, the seed pulp is white and opaque. It becomes clear and gelatinous when ripe. Fruits are at their optimum maturity when the seed pulp has turned into a clear jelly with no hint of browning. Once the seed pulp and surrounding flesh start to brown, the fruit is overripe, but still may be eaten, or used to make a delicious juice.

The flower petals are edible, with a flavor that is slightly sweet with hints of cinnamon. The most common use is as an addition to salads. They regularly are consumed by birds.

Feijoa is also cultivated in Azerbaijan. Besides its consumption in natural form, feijoa jam and compote is prepared and produced both in-home and on industrial scales.

Cultivation

Some grafted cultivars of feijoa are self-fertile. Most are not, and require a pollinator. Seedlings may or may not be of usable quality, and may or may not be self-fertile. Feijoas will mature into a sprawly shrub, but can be kept successfully as a large container plant, though accommodations will need to be made for the width of the plants, and the need to encourage new growth for fruit production. They can succeed in greenhouses in temperate parts of the United States, and have been grown in-ground as fruiting trees on the United States east coast in coastal Georgia and South Carolina as well as in California. Other regions of the United States: the Pacific Northwest, the southernmost Appalachian Mountains, and the immediate coastal region from North Carolina to Delaware all would warrant further investigation.

In California, robins, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, starlings, scrub jays, towhees, and grey squirrels feast on the petals and are presumed to be assisting with pollination.[citation needed] Honeybees also visit the flowers.

In the South Caucasus, feijoa was cultivated in the southern coastal region of Azerbaijan since 1928; cultivation in neighboring Georgia has gradually increased to about 988 hectares in 1986.

In New Zealand, the pollinators of this plant are bees, bumblebees, and medium-sized birds. The silvereye is a pollinator in the cooler parts of the South Island; the blackbird and the Indian myna, which feeds on the sweet, fleshy flower petals, are pollinators further north.

In some areas where the species has been introduced, however, the trees have been unproductive due to lack of pollinators. The shrub has very few insect pests.

The species is found in all states of mainland Australia.

A shrub, four metres tall, erect, with drooping branchlets, almost leafless. The species bears flowering branchlets, which may have small, greenish-yellow, and stalkless leaves. The flowers are just 1 mm across and of a similar colour, occasionally white.
Japanese Red Maple Seeds (Acer palmatum atropurpureum)

Price for Package of 5 seeds.

Japanese maple, Acer palmatum, is a deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, rounded shape. Native to China, Korea and Japan, this lovely plant is greatly admired and is grown in temperate gardens and landscapes all over the world. This red 'ATTROPURPUREUM" variety is possibly even more beautiful than the standard and more commonly offered version and it is one of the most beautiful small trees for an ornamental landscape. It is perfectly suited as a specimen tree, an accent in a mixed border, or in a container on the patio. It anchors the Japanese style garden.

The brilliant autumn foliage lights up the garden, and the slender twigs and contorted branches provide winter interest. The canopy is wispy and delicate, and in some cultivars, weeping. The species usually stays about 4 to 6 m tall and wide, but can get larger under ideal conditions. It has slender, glabrous twigs and smooth gray bark. Branches tend to grow in horizontal layers, and often are contorted and twisted, and some specimens have more than one main trunk. The palmate leaves are 5-13 cm long and wide, and deeply dissected with 5 to 11 lobes. The lobes are lance shaped, sharply pointed at the tips and doubly toothed on the edges. Acer palmatum attropurpureum is famous for its autumn display when leaves turn brilliant shades of deep red.

It needs a fertile, well drained, acidic soil with filtered to full shade, the latter being best in warmer regions. It will take sub-tropical heat. Highly frost resistant it is not drought tolerant and needs regular watering.

Japanese maple will grow from seeds, and seedlings tend to be faster growing, stronger and more drought tolerant than cultivars.

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

0

Stratification:

3-4 months in moist sowing mix at 2-5 ° C refrigerator

Sowing Time:

all year round> Autumn / Winter preferred

Sowing Depth:

1 cm

Sowing Mix:

Coir or sowing mix + sand or perlite

Germination temperature:

18-20 ° C

Location:

bright + keep constantly moist not wet

Germination Time:

3-6 weeks

Watering:

Water regularly during the growing season

Copyright © 2012 Seeds Gallery - Saatgut Galerie - Galerija semena. All Rights Reserved.

Paulownia Tomentosa Seeds (Empress, Foxglove Tree)

Price for Package of 25 seeds.

Paulownia tormentosa is known by many names; regardless of what you want to call it, there is no doubt about its impressive ornamental features. This beautiful tree puts on an awe inspiring show in spring. Its soft chamois velvet buds open into large violet to blue, trumpet-like blossoms which fill the air with a sweet fragrance. The flowers carried on long up curved shoots, look like large foxgloves.

The huge leaves are an architectural delight: the soft, downy, large leaves appear after the flowers have opened.

Native to eastern Asia, this exotic looking, deciduous tree is surprisingly hardy and can tolerate harsh winters, to - 8*C (-14*F). Hardy throughout the British Isles, the buds of the Foxglove-like flowers are formed in the autumn and can be damaged by late frosts. They must be sheltered from hard frosts to ensure the violet blooms appear in spring.

It is a fast growing tree, usually grown as a specimen or shade tree. Growing rapidly (to 6f)t in it first year. In 3-5 years, this tree achieves what many other tree species take generations to achieve. An excellent use of this plant is the production of "stooled" specimens giving perhaps the most magnificent of all foliage dot plants. All growth is cut down to ground level each March and the resultant suckers reduced to a single shoot. The result is a strong, erect growth rising to 10 ft. and bearing huge and handsome leaves, producing a most striking effect. In very cold zones they are often grown and cut to near ground level in autumn and grown as a large-leafed shrub the following season.

Very easy to germinate, seedlings grow rapidly, flowering in as little as 2-3 years under good growing conditions.

It has been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Named after the Princess of the Dutch region, Anna Paulowna, who died in 1865. It has never been found in the wild although it undoubtedly originated in China where an old custom is to plant an Empress Tree when a baby girl is born. The fast-growing tree matures as she does. When she is eligible for marriage the tree is cut down and carved into wooden articles for her dowry. Carving the wood of Paulownia is an art form in Japan and China.

Sowing:

Sow September to May

The seeds are very small so sow as thinly as possible to avoid crowding which leave seedlings more susceptible to damping off. Place the seeds on the surface of a tray containing well drained compost. Do not cover the seeds as light is required for germination.

Stand the tray in water to soak and either cover with a plastic dome or place the tray into a plastic bag. Temperatures should ideally not exceed 30*C (85*F) during the daytime and not below 18*C (60*F) at night. Always keep the soil mixture moist (not soaked) during the germination process. The seeds will germinate in 30 – 60 days and grow rapidly when conditions are favourable.

Growing:

After germination, remove the cover or bag. When seedlings are big enough to handle (about 2-3 weeks), carefully transfer to pots. Grow on until they are strong enough to plant into their permanent positions. Harden off before planting out (after the last expected frosts).

Aftercare:

Pruning should be done in autumn after leaf drop. prune down to where an axillary bud can take over as the single leader. Coppicing a tree annually sacrifices the flowers but produces 3m (10ft) stems with enormous leaves up to 60cm (2ft) across.

Plant Uses:

A specimen tree, shade tree, or focal point.
Fully hardy to -25°C.

Sowing Instructions

Propagation:

Seeds

Pretreat:

0

Stratification:

0

Sowing Time:

all year round

Sowing Depth:

Light germinator! Wide spreading with large dark green leaves ocasionally exceeding 60 cm in lenght and wide. Grows extremely rapidly in the first few years after which the growth slows. As they mature their leaves become smaller and the crowns more sparse. The leaves can provide useful feed for stock and the flowers that bloom in spring before the leaves appear produce large amounts of nectar.

No significant disease or insect problem, grows in most soils.
