Parsley Giant of Naples Seeds (Petroselinum crispum)

Price for Package of 600 (1g) seeds.

Parsley Giant of Naples. Very large flat-leaf variety from Naples with incredible flavor. Plants are large with strong, long stalks and large leaves.

Start from seed or transplants. Leaves grow back stronger after cutting. 75-80 days. Very cold hardy. Will overwinter in most areas.

PARSLEY PLANTING, GROWING, AND HARVESTING PARSLEY

Parsley is a biennial plant with bright green, featherlike leaves and is in the same family as dill. This herb is used in soups, sauces, and salads, and it lessens the need for salt in soups. Not only is it the perfect garnish, but also it is healthy; it’s rich in iron and vitamins A and C.

PLANTING

For a head start, plant seeds in individual pots indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last spring frost. For better germination, you can soak the seeds overnight.

Plant the seeds 3 to 4 weeks before the last spring frost because parsley is a slow starter. (The plants can handle the cold weather.) It can take up to 3 weeks for the plants to sprout.

Plant the seeds in moist, rich soil about 6 to 8 inches apart. For thinner plants, plant about 6 to 10 inches apart. Try to pick an area that is weed-free; that way, you’ll be able to see the parsley sprouting after about 3 weeks.

You can use a fluorescent light to help the seedlings grow. Make sure it remains two inches above the leaves at all times.

To ensure the best growth, the soil should be around 70ºF.

Plant parsley near asparagus, corn, and tomatoes in your garden.

CARE

Be sure to water the seeds often while they germinate so that they don’t dry out.

Throughout the summer, be sure to water the plants evenly.

PESTS/DISEASES

Stem rot

Leaf spots

Black swallowtail larvae

Carrot fly and celery fly larvae

HARVEST/STORAGE

When the leaf stems have three segments, parsley is ready to be harvested.

Cut leaves from the outer portions of the plant whenever you need them. Leave the inner portions of the plant to mature.

One method of storing the parsley fresh is to put the leaf stalks in water and keep them in the refrigerator.

Another method of storage is drying the parsley. Cut the parsley at the base and hang it in a well-ventilated, shady, and warm place. Once it’s completely dry, crumble it up and store it in an airtight container.

If you want fresh parsley throughout the winter, replant a parsley plant in a pot and keep it in a sunny window.

Parsley Seeds Italian Giant Flat Multiannual

Price for Package of 300 (1g) seeds.

Also known as Italian parsley, flat-leaf parsley has dark green leaves and a pungent, sweet flavor. This parsley is best for cooking since it can withstand heat and retains its flavour better than curly parsley.

Italian Giant is a selective plant with deeply cut, bright green leaves. Known to have better flavor than other varieties, it is increasingly popular in the kitchen and is indispensable for a huge range of cooked and salad dishes. It is the choice parsley for drying.

Parsley can also be grown a pot to keep indoors year-round or over the winter for a supply of fresh leaves. Though technically a biennial, it is often grown as an annual herb where it cannot winter over.
Don’t grow in those “Parsley Pots” – the one with six holes around the side…parsley likes moisture and these containers dry out too fast, the holes in the side are small and make it difficult to water and the parsley has too big a tap root to be happy!

Soil Preparation:

Parsley is a hungry plant it likes good deep soil, not too light and not acidic. Feed the chosen site well in the autumn with well-rotted manure. If you wish to harvest parsley all year round, prepare two different sites. For summer supplies, a western or eastern border is ideal because the plant needs moisture and prefers a little shade.
Anijszaad (Pimpinella anisum)

In alcoholische dranken

Medicinale werking

The stems and leaves are shiny glabrous green to yellow-green and smell of lime when crushed. The larger basal leaves are up to 70 cm (28 in) long, tripinnate, with broad triangular to rhomboidal, acutely pointed leaflets with a few marginal teeth; the stem leaves are smaller, and less divided with few leaflets. The flowers are yellow to greenish-yellow, 2–3 mm (0.079–0.118 in) diameter, produced in globose umbels up to 10–15 cm (3.9–5.9 in) diameter; flowering is in late spring. The fruit is a dry two-parted schizocarp 4–7 mm (0.16–0.28 in) long, mature in autumn.

Distribution

The exact native range is disputed; some sources cite it as native to much of Europe and southwestern Asia, others from only the eastern Mediterranean region in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, and yet others only to southwestern Asia in Iran and Afghanistan, citing European populations as naturalized. It has been long cultivated in Europe, the leaves being used as an herb, the roots as a vegetable, and the seeds as a spice, especially in southern European cuisine.

Properties and uses

The leaves can be used in salads, or to make soup or season broths, and the roots can be eaten as a vegetable or grated for use in salads. Its flavor and smell is somewhat similar to celery. The seeds can be used as a spice, similar to fennel seeds. In the UK, an alcoholic lovage cordial is traditionally mixed with brandy in the ratio of 2:1 as a winter drink. In Romania, the leaves are the preferred seasoning for the various local broths, much more so than parsley or dill.

The roots, which contain heavy, volatile oil, are used as a mild aquaretic. Lovage root contains furanocoumarins which can lead to photosensitivity.

Etymology

The name "lovage" is from "love-ache", ache is a medieval name for parsley; this is a folk-etymological corruption of the older French name levesche, from late Latin levisticum, in turn thought to be a corruption of the earlier Latin ligusticum, "of Liguria" (northwest Italy), where the herb was grown extensively.[9] In modern botanical usage, both Latin forms are now used for different (but closely related) genera, with Levisticum for (culinary) lovage, and Ligusticum for Scots lovage, a similar species from northern Europe, and for related species.[4][9] In Germany and the Netherlands, one of the common names of lovage is Maggikraut (German) or Maggiplant (Dutch) because the plant's taste is reminiscent of Maggi soup seasoning[citation needed]; however, the classic German name is Liebstöckel, which is literally translated as "love stick".[10] In Northern Germany, it is sometimes called Beifuss. Italian levistico or sedano di monte, French livèche, Romanian leuştean, Hungarian lestyán, Russian любисток lyubeestok, etc. In Bulgaria, it is known as девесил deveseel. The Czech name is libeček, and the Polish name is lubczyk, both meaning "love herb". The name in Swedish is libbsticka, Norwegian løpstikke. The Croatian name for this plant is ljupčac or vegeta (named after a well-known Croatian meal seasoning similar to Maggi); the Finnish name is liperi or lipstikka, the former meaning "preacher's collar", because in old ages the plant was cultivated in monasteries or in rectories, while the latter is from Swedish, which is the second language spoken in Finland.

Gotu kola zaden (Centella asiatica)
