Carrot Nantes 11000 seeds

Price for Package of 11000 seeds (20g).

Developed in the area of the town of Nantes, France, this classic carrot is famous for flavor and a big crunch. Bright orange flesh is fine grained with almost no core. Roots average 6-7” long with blunt ends and small to medium tops. Shorter roots make the Scarlet Nantes carrot successful in some soils where longer-rooted varieties have trouble developing fully.

Sowing Instructions

Site & Soil

Get the soil conditions correct and carrots are one of the easiest vegetables to grow in the cooler climates. Incorrect soil conditions lead to mis-shapen carrots - these may well cause a chuckle when dug up, but they are not so well appreciated at cooking time! Carrots prefer a light soil which has been improved with lots of well-rotted organic material fully dug into the soil. Carrots grown on heavy soil, or where organic material is not well-rotted, will become misshapen and grow 'forked. Stones in the soil will have the same bad effect. Prepare the bed two weeks or so before planting, forking in a handful of bonemeal for each square metre (yard). Ensure that the soil is dug to a spade's depth and is of a crumbly texture.

When to Sow

Sow seeds from early spring to autumn

How to Sow

Using a trowel, dig out narrow drills 2cm (3/4inch) deep and 12cm (8inches) apart. Carrot seed is fine - the easiest way to sow is to empty some seed from the packet into the palm of your left hand and and take small pinches of seed with your right hand fingers, dropping a couple of seeds every 2.5cm (1 inch) along the narrow drills. Sow the seed thinly to avoid too much thinning out later. Cover the seeds with fine soil very gently firming it down. Water with a fine spray if the conditions are dry. The seedlings should start to appear 15 to 20 days later.

<colgroup><col width="25%"><col></colgroup>

Details

Common Name

Carrot

Botanical Name

Daucus

Light Requirements

Full Sun

How to Grow

Direct Sow

Planting Depth

1/4 inch

Planting Time

Cool Season

Seed Spacing

1/2 inch

Row Spacing

12-15 inches

Space After Thinning

1-2 inches

Days to Germination

6-53

Days to Harvest

65

Ways to Grow

Small Gardens

In the Kitchen

Freezing, Roasting, Salads, Steaming

Estimated Mature Height

8-12 inches tall

Is It Heirloom?

Yes

Is It Organic?

Yes

Ships As

Seed

Ships to Worldwide

Yes

See Cornell University’s Vegetable MD Online for more information.

Other Known Issues

Misshapen Roots – In general, carrots do not grow well in heavy soils. To prevent this from happening, hill up dirt around the tops of the carrots.

Rainbow Carrot Seeds (mixed colors)

Price for Package of 25 seeds.

Rainbow mix carrot lives up to its name — its 11” long tapered roots are a beautiful Rainbow mix color that gets brighter when cooked. This variety gets its hue from healthful Lypocene, a precursor to beta carotene credited for helping prevent several types of cancer. Grow carrots in cool weather. Draw out the Rainbow mix remarkable color and flavor by steaming, roasting or baking these crispy roots. They’re very tasty in soups or stews.

Carrots are grown on heavy soil, or where organic material is not well-rotted, will become misshapen and grow 'forked. Stones in the soil will have the same bad effect. Prepare the bed two weeks or so before planting, forking in a handful of bonemeal for each square meter (yard). Ensure that the soil is dug to a spade's depth and is of a crumbly texture.

When to Sow

Sow seeds from early spring to autumn

How to Sow

Using a trowel, dig out narrow drills 2cm (3/4inch) deep and 12cm (8inches) apart. Carrot seed is fine - the easiest way to sow is to empty some seed from the packet into the palm of your left hand and take small pinches of seed with your right-hand fingers, dropping a couple of seeds every 2.5cm (1 inch) along with the narrow drills. Sow the seed thinly to avoid too much thinning out later. Cover the seeds with fine soil very gently firming it down. Water with a fine spray if the conditions are dry. The seedlings should start to appear 15 to 20 days later.

Carrot 'Nantes' Seed Tape

Price for Package of 1m (75-100 seeds).

Seed tapes are an easy way to sow carrots without struggling to handle the small seeds, or the need for thinning out. Simply roll out these tapes of pre-spaced seed in a moist, well prepared seed drill. This fast maturing selection is ideal for early sowings under glass in late winter for your first crop of the year. Carrot ‘Nantes 2’ produces blunt tipped, medium length roots of about 15cm (6") long. This virtually coreless variety has a rich orange colour and sweet crunchy taste. Height: 30cm (12"). Spread: 15cm (6").

How To Sow

Direct sow carrot seeds outdoors from March to July. Early varieties may also be sown from February to March in greenhouse borders or under cloches. Specific autumn sowing carrot varieties can be sown as late as October under cloches for an early crop in spring. Grow Carrots in a weed free, sunny position in fertile, light, well drained soil. Carrots dislike freshly manured soils so seed beds are best prepared in autumn, well in advance of spring sowings.

Sow carrot seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½in) in drills 30cm (12") apart. Germination will take 10 to 20 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 10cm (4in) apart. Where space is limited, growing carrots in containers will also produce a worthwhile crop.

Aftercare

Water well to encourage germination. Once germinated, carrots should be watered only when necessary to keep the soil moist as excessive water may encourage leaf growth instead of roots. During growth, the carrot roots may be earthed up to prevent green crowns developing.

Cover later carrot sowings with fleece or fine netting, and remove all thinnings from the site to minimise carrot fly infestation. Carrots can be harvested from July to December depending on their sowing date. Early varieties may be lifted when required from 9 weeks onwards, while maincrops can be harvested after 11 weeks from their sowing date. Pull a single carrot first to assess the size of the roots. If the soil is dry, lifting carrots can be made easier by watering beforehand. Roots can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 4 months.

Carrot Seeds Atomic Red

Price for Package of 25 seeds.

The Atomic Red carrot lives up to its name — its 11” long tapered roots are a beautiful scarlet color that gets brighter when cooked. This variety gets its hue from healthful Lypocene, a precursor to beta carotene credited for helping prevent several types of cancer. Grow carrots in cool weather. Draw out the Atomic Red’s remarkable color and flavor by steaming, roasting or baking these crispy roots. They’re very tasty in soups or stews.
