Alyssum maritimum, common name sweet alyssum or sweet alison, also commonly referred to as just alyssum (from the genus Alyssum in which it was formerly classified) is a species of low-growing flowering plant in the family Brassicaceae.

Description

It is an annual plant (rarely a short-lived perennial plant)[2] growing to 5–30 cm (2–12 in) tall by 20–30 cm (8–12 in) broad. The stem is very branched, with dense clusters of small flowers. The leaves are 1–4 mm long and 3–5 mm, broad, alternate, sessile, quite hairy, oval to lanceolate, with an entire margin.

The flowers are about 5 millimetres (0.20 in) in diameter, sweet-smelling, with four white rounded petals (or pink, rose-red, violet and lilac[2]) and four sepals. The six stamens have yellow anthers. The flowers are produced throughout the growing season, or year-round in areas free of frost. They are pollinated by insects (entomophily). The fruits are numerous elongated seedpods rather hairy, oval to rounded, each containing two seeds. The dispersal of seed is effected by the wind (anemochory)

Etymology

The genus name Lobularia comes from the a Greek word meaning "small pod", referring to the shape of the fruits. The name of the species maritima refers to its preferred coastal habitat.

Distribution

This plant is native to the Mediterranean region, Macaronesia (Canary Islands, Azores) and in France in the Bay of Biscay. It is widely naturalized elsewhere in the temperate world. There is an endemic subspecies in the local flora of the Columbretes Islands.

Habitat

It is common on sandy beaches and dunes, but can also grow on cultivated fields, walls, slopes and waste ground, preferably on calcareous soil, at an altitude of 0–300 metres (0–984 ft) above sea level.

Cultivation

Lobularia maritima is cultivated in gardens, with many horticultural varieties with purple or pink flowers. The plant is best planted in early spring, but requires little maintenance when growing. Although an annual, it may reseed in temperate climates.[2] It will flower more profusely if spent blooms are trimmed. When grown in gardens, it is typically used as groundcover, as it rarely grows higher than 20 cm (8 in) tall. It is also grown in cracks in paving and walls, and is especially associated with coastal locations. It prefers partial shade, and is resistant to heat and drought. Plants with darker-colored flowers do better in cooler temperatures.

SWEET WILLIAM Seeds edible flowers (Dianthus barbatus)

Price for Package of 50 seeds.

Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William) is a species of Dianthus native to southern Europe and parts of Asia which has become a popular ornamental garden plant. It is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant growing to 30–75 cm tall, with flowers in a dense cluster of up to 30 at the top of the stems. Each flower is 2–3 cm diameter with five petals displaying serrated edges. Wild plants produce red flowers with a white base, but colours in cultivars range from white, pink, red, and purple to variegated patterns. The exact origin of its English common name is unknown but first appears in 1596 in botanist John Gerard's garden catalog. The flowers are edible and may have medicinal properties. Sweet William attracts bees, birds, and butterflies.

Description

Sweet William is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant native to the mountains of southern Europe from the Pyrenees east to the Carpathians and the Balkans, with a variety disjunct in northeastern China, Korea, and southeasternmost Russia. It grows to 30–75 cm tall, with green to glaucous blue-green tapered leaves 4–10 cm long and 1–2 cm broad. The flowers are produced in a dense cluster of up to 30 at the top of the stems and have a spicy, clove-like scent; each flower is 2–3 cm diameter with five petals with serrated edges; in wild plants the petals are red with a white base.

English name

Many legends purport to explain how Sweet William acquired its English common name, but none is verified. "Sweet William" is often said to honour the 18th century Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. As a result of the Duke's victory at the Battle of Culloden and his generally brutal treatment of the king's enemies, it is also claimed that the Scots sometimes call the flower "Stinking Billy". Though this makes a nice story, it is entirely untrue. The Scots sometimes refer to the noxious ragwort, as "Stinking Billy" in memory of the infamous Duke. The English botanist John Gerard referred to Dianthus barbatus as "Sweete Williams" in his garden catalogue of 1596, 150 years before Culloden. Phillips speculated that the flower was named after Gerard's contemporary, William Shakespeare. It is also said to be named after Saint William of York or after William the Conqueror. Another etymological derivation is that william is a corruption of the French oillet, meaning "little eye". Sweet William is a favourite name for lovelorn young men in English folkloric ballads, e.g., "Fair Margaret and Sweet William."

Cultivation and uses

Sweet William is a popular ornamental plant in gardens, with numerous cultivars and hybrids selected for differing flower colour, ranging from white, pink, red, and purple to variegated patterns.

The plant was introduced to northern Europe in the 16th century, and later to North America and elsewhere, and has become locally to widely naturalised in these areas.

John Gerard praises its beauty but omits any reference to medicinal uses. Its height makes it convenient for flower arrangements. In the Victorian language of flowers, sweet william symbolizes gallantry. The plant is widely used in borders, rock gardens and informal country cottage style gardens. Sweet William is a good candidate for a naturalistic garden because its nectar attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. Its flowers are considered edible.

It thrives in loamy, slightly alkaline soil with sun to partial shade. Propagation is by seed, cuttings, or division, but seeds of cultivars will not breed true. If it is planted from seed after the last frost, it will flower in the second year. If it is planted in flats before the last frost and then transplanted, it may flower in the first year. Some gardeners recommend deadheading to encourage further flowering. The plant is self-seeding. Sweet William can suffer from Fusarium Wilt which causes the leaves to curl or droop down.

In 1977 the question of possible medical uses was revisited by Cordell. Saponins were found in Sweet William, but there has been little follow-up.

At the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on 29 April 2011, Catherine Middleton included Sweet William in her bouquet, a tribute to her bridegroom.

Tagetes Big Marigold Seeds

Price for Package of 100 seeds (0,4g)

Tips on How to Grow Marigold Seeds:GerminationOptimum conditions for seedling development that begins the day the crop is sown until cotyledon expansion.Expect radicle emergence 3 – 8 days. Cover: Seeds may be covered with a thin layer of medium vermiculite to maintain moisture levels. Media: • pH: 6.2 – 6.5. pH levels <6.0 may induce iron, manganese or sodium toxicity in Marigolds. Symptoms are exhibited on the lower leaves. Marigolds can be used as an indicator plant for low pH. Light: Light is not necessary for germination. If utilizing a chamber, providing a light source of 10 – 100 foot candles will improve germination Dramatically compared to seed germinated in the dark. Moisture: Saturated for days 1 – 3 or until radicle emergence. On days 4 – 7 reduce moisture to moist . Once actively growing, begin alternating between moisture levels wet and medium . Allow media to approach dry before re-saturating to level . Humidity: 100% until radicle emergence then reduce to 40%. Dehumidify: Provide horizontal airflow to aid in drying down the media through evapotranspiration, allowing better penetration of oxygen to the roots. Temperature: 72° – 75°F (22° – 24°C) Average Daily Temperature (ADT): 67°F (19°C)

Finish Bulking/Flower Initiation – Optimum conditions during the vegetative period, beginning at transplant, needed for the root to reach the edge of the container; AND to make the plant receptive to flower initiation. Media: • pH: 6.2 – 6.5 Marigolds can be used as an indicator plant for low pH conditions. Typical symptoms of low pH <6.0 include yellowing of lower leaves, or browning/burning of leaf edges. Light: Provide 3500 – 4500 foot candles to hasten flower induction. Supplemental lighting under low light conditions at 350 – 450 foot candles will enhance shoot and root growth.

Temperature: 55° – 65°F (13° – 18°C) nights, 65° – 70°F (18° – 23°C) days.

Heat stress will encourage flower heads to be reduced in size. New growth will appear “bleached” when temperatures are too cool in early Spring. Plants will “green up” once night temperatures are increased. Average Daily Temperature 67°F (19°C)

Humidity: 40 – 70%

Dehumidify: Provide horizontal airflow to aid in drying down the media through evapotranspiration, allowing better penetration of oxygen to the roots.

Light: Full sun.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 10.

Hence a sheltered garden position is essential.

This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

PROPAGATION

Echiums can be raised from seed but most will take 2-3 years to flower.
The best time to sow is April-June and seed should be only lightly covered, preferably with vermiculite, and not
over watered. In the wild the conditions are hot days/cool nights and constant heat could cause them to fail, so
move into a cool position at night. Echium produce lots of seed, especially the monocarpic species, and in a mild
winter they may germinate in the ground. If you collect your own seed be aware that the fruit is in the form of a
nutlet containing four individual seeds, and it is advisable not to separate them as this could cause damage. Also be
aware that cross pollination may produce variations in colour.
Cuttings can be taken from the shrubby species in late May/June, immediately after flowering. Cutting back into
the green stem should produce side shoots for cuttings. The trick with cuttings is a careful balance of watering to
avoid rotting off.

Native to the plateau of central Mexico, as one of the unarmed agaves, it is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens.

Cultivation: Agave attenuata is an excellent plant which works well with other succulents or even tropical plant material. It is well suited for a container inside or a sheltered warm spot outdoors. It is a frost tender plant and it will usually be severely damaged in temperatures below -2° C. Although Agave attenuata survives in poor soils and can tolerate full coastal sun to to full shade, it does best in rich but well-drained soil mix ( 2 parts peat moss to 1 part loam to 1 part of pumice) with half sun exposures.

The plant is extremely drought tolerant but does better with ample moisture and grows quickly if kept well watered and nourished (Slow release fertilizer applied once or twice a year is usually sufficient). During the winter months, one should only water enough to keep the leaves from shrivelling. Plants cultivated outdoors are more drought tolerant and can take some heat and full sun. It tolerates seaside conditions too. Protect from snails which can also disfigure the plant.

Offsets or 'pups' can be removed to maintain the strong architectural lines of the agave and provide great additional plants, or left to form a clump.

Propagation: By seeds or by removing suckers produced at the base of older plants or using the thousands of small bulbils produced on its' entire flower stalk length. Seeds germinate readily when they are fresh. The basal suckers can be removed in spring or summer, letting the cuttings dry for a few days before inserting in compost.

As plants get older, they produce smooth curving trunks, often branched, that rise 40-100 cm tall (unusual among agaves) and eventually old leaves fall off, leaving them naked and visible.

WIKIPEDIA:

Agave attenuata is a species of agave sometimes known as the "lion's tail," "swan's neck," or "foxtail" for its development of a curved stem, unusual among agaves. Native to the plateau of the State of Jalisco in central Mexico, as one of the unarmed agaves, it is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens in many other places. It is reportedly naturalized in Madeira and Libya.

The stems typically range from 50 to 150 cm (20–60 in) in length, and eventually old leaves fall off, leaving them visible. The leaves are ovate-acuminate, 50–70 cm (20–28 in) long and 12–16 cm (5–6 in) wide, pale in color, ranging from a light gray to a light yellowish green. There are no teeth, nor terminal spines, although the leaves taper to points that fray with age. The inflorescence is a dense raceme 2.5 to 3 meters (8 to 10 ft) high, with greenish-yellow flowers.

Specimens were sent to Kew by the explorer Galeotti in 1834, from an unspecified location in central Mexico. More recent study has reported it from Jalisco east to Mexico, in small colonies at elevations of 1,900 to 2,500 meters (6,200 to 8,200 ft), but there have been few sightings, suggesting this agave is rare in the wild.

In cultivation, Agave attenuata is said to prefer relatively moist loamy soil, although it can cope with poor soil and dry conditions. It should be protected from direct sunlight in summer and from long periods of frost.

Giant Yellow Passion Fruit Seeds (Passiflora Flavicarpa)

Price for Package of 5 or 10 seeds.

Passiflora flavicarpa, the Yellow Passion Fruit, or Golden Passion Fruit, is native from southern Brazil through Paraguay to northern Argentina and now cultivated in all tropical areas. This is a vigorous perennial vine, with stems reaching lengths of 20 to 50, or even 80 meters high. It climbs by means of clinging tendrils. It grows on fences or trellises, or allow it to scramble over shrubs and trees. It can be kept as a container plant. It may be grown as a houseplant in a sunny South-facing window.

It's a fast grower with beautiful flowers and edible fruits. The flowers are fragrant, 6 to 9 cm wide. The corona is composed of white filaments, or white and purple. The first leaves are unilobate, becoming trilobate very soon. The leaves are glossy dark green and vary from 5 to 18 cm in length for the central lobe and from 4 to 17 cm for the lateral lobes.

The fruit is produced on a woody vine from bisexual flowers. The fruit is somewhat tart and contains many black seeds. It is less fragrant and slightly more acid than the Passiflora Edulis. Passion Fruit is commonly used in beverages. The yellow fruit is a round to oval, 6-12 cm by 4-7 cm. The pulp constitutes up to 55% of the fruit in the best selections.

Pruning is a must to keep the vine healthy. Prune off less vigorous growth and occasionally prune back vigorous growth to promote flowering. When established, and without care, the passion fruit can easily overtake other garden plants, shading them from the sun.

Hardiness zone 11, (4°C/40°F) in Winter. It has only mild hardiness, surviving temperatures to 40°F, so protect from any frosts. Passiflora Flavicarpa is best in the Subtropics and prefers full sun, it will scramble over trees and shrubs to get it. It is also more demanding in terms of heat and humidity than Passiflora Edulis, and will grow better at low elevations. Provide ideally a temperature of 25°- 30°C. It will do best in a loam-based mix with a little peat moss. Passiflora Flavicarpa likes light and evenly moist soil, mulch well.

You may need to water your plants on a daily basis during the hottest summer months. During the Winter the roots should be kept moist, but as growth will be much slower you will probably only need to water once a week, depending on growing temperature. Fertilize at least once every two weeks in the growing season.

If their pot is too large or if they have an unrestricted root run then the whole plant will simply get bigger and bigger but it will refuse to flower and therefore produce the fruits. By limiting the pot size you are limiting the ability to grow and this is seen as a threat, so the natural mechanism is to produce seed for the next generation.
