It is also naturalized inĀ Australia,Ā New Zealand,Ā IrelandĀ andĀ Great Britain, and scattered locations in theĀ Americas.Ā The only known species isĀ Lagurus ovatus, commonly calledĀ hare's-tail,Ā hare's-tail grassĀ orĀ bunnytail.Ā It is also grown as anĀ ornamental plantĀ for its attractive flower panicles.
Lagurus ovatusĀ is a clump-formingĀ annualĀ growing to 50Ā cm (20Ā in) tall by 30Ā cm (12Ā in) tall, with pale green grassy foliage and numerous short, oval green flowerheads, turning to a buff colour as they ripen, all summer long.
Native to theĀ MediterraneanĀ and introduced intoĀ Britain, it is now thriving on sandy stretches in the islands ofĀ GuernseyĀ andĀ Jersey, occasionally found inĀ IrelandĀ andĀ South Wales. It has becomeĀ naturalizedĀ in County Wexford, Ireland, South Devon and West Sussex.
This plant is known or likely to beĀ susceptibleĀ toĀ barley mild mosaic bymovirus.
