🍃 Eucalyptus pauciflora, commonly known as Snow Gum or White Sallee, is a hardy evergreen species in the Myrtaceae family. It grows as a small tree or large shrub, reaching 4–8 m (13–26 ft) tall, occasionally up to 20 m (66 ft). Native to subalpine and lowland habitats of eastern Australia, it is among the hardiest eucalyptus species, tolerating severe winter temperatures. Other common names include Cabbage Gum, Weeping Gum, and White Sallee.
The bark is smooth, white to light grey, sometimes brown-red, shedding in patches for a mottled appearance. Adult leaves are grey-green, usually lanceolate to broadly lanceolate with distinct parallel veins, occasionally narrowly ovate. The tree produces masses of white flowers in spring and summer. Despite its name “pauciflora” (few flowers), it can flower abundantly; the name may refer to an early specimen that lost buds in transit.
Snow gums are adapted to snow: rather than dropping leaves in winter, branches bend progressively so outer branches extend vertically downward, shedding snow. They occur as woodlands or open woodlands at altitudes of 1,300–1,800 m (4,265–5,906 ft) in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory, marking the altitudinal tree line. Lowland populations are rare due to land clearing, and preservation efforts are ongoing.
E. pauciflora regenerates from seed, epicormic shoots below the bark, and lignotubers. It is the most cold-tolerant eucalyptus species, with E. pauciflora subsp. niphophila surviving down to −23 °C (−9 °F). The species has also been introduced to Norway.
