Broad Bean Aquadulce (Vicia faba) is a hardy annual prized for its high yield, sweet flavor, and easy cultivation.
This white-seeded variety produces pods up to 23cm (9in) long, maturing in 90 days with plants reaching 90–100cm (36–40in) in height. Recognized for its exceptional taste, Aquadulce is ideal for children’s gardens and autumn sowing, thriving in cool climates below 15°C (60°F).
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit and recommended by the River Cottage Handbook Veg Patch, this variety delivers a very early crop and establishes itself quickly. Young beans, smaller than a thumbnail, can even be eaten raw, while lightly boiled beans (just 2 minutes) reveal their maximum sweetness.
🌾 Time: Earliest crops sow early autumn to late winter or spring.

Double rows 7cm (2in) deep, 23cm (9in) apart
Rows spaced 40–60cm (18–24in) apart
Plant or thin seeds 20cm apart in staggered rows 30cm apart
Extra seeds at row ends can be used as transplants
As plants grow, provide stakes or a frame to prevent breakage from winter winds.
Construct narrow boxes of stakes 120cm apart
Twist string from stake to stake for support
Add further string levels as beans grow taller
Water regularly at the base, especially during dry periods
Remove side shoots from the base to conserve plant energy
After cropping, remove plants to prevent young shoots exhausting the soil
When flowers wilt and tiny pods appear, pinch top leaf clusters
This directs energy into pod development
Young leafy tops are edible: stir-fry lightly in butter or use in tarts and omelettes
8–10 weeks from spring sowing
Pick 2–3 times per week for 4–6 weeks of continuous production
Best flavor when beans are just showing through pods with white or green scars
Remove pods with a sharp downward twist
Fat, mature pods at the end of summer require 10 minutes boiling, then slip out tender green kernels
